Professional Experience

Jim is a Partner in the firm. Jim maintains a broad and complex civil litigation practice across the State of Montana, in state and federal court. Jim’s experience includes litigating insurance coverage disputes, defending contractors facing construction defect claims, and defending governmental entities facing constitutional claims. Representative clients and cases include defending a local government facing a complex inverse condemnation claim, representing individuals and businesses facing fire loss claims involving thousands of acres of burned ground, or defending a local government facing a multimillion-dollar personal injury claim.

Jim graduated from William and Mary Law School, magna cum laude, where he served as Articles Editor on the Environmental Law and Policy Review, was admitted to the Order of the Coif, and published a law review article on subsurface property rights and carbon sequestration. Jim previously served as a law clerk to Justice Michael E. Wheat of the Montana Supreme Court and worked as a legal and policy advisor for Senator Max Baucus and Senator John Walsh in Washington, D.C. Jim received his undergraduate degree, with high honors, from the University of Montana, and was named a Presidential Scholar as the top student in his graduating class.

Personal and Community Involvement

Jim was born and raised in Great Falls, Montana. He volunteers as treasurer of his PTA, coaches a variety of youth sports, serves on the boards of directors of Montana Credit Union and the Montana Defendant Trial Lawyers, and serves as a Commissioner on the Montana Continuing Legal Education Commission.
